Meet the Team

  • Robert Bowman PhD

    Principal Investigator

I have a long-standing interest in investigating cellular behaviors and interactions in complex environments. My PhD studies in the Joyce Lab focused on uncovering the transcriptional regulation and developmental ontogeny of tumor-associated macrophages in brain tumors. As I studied the functions of myeloid cells in disease, I became increasingly interested in the epigenetic mechanisms regulating their development, and how these processes can be co-opted in leukemia. In the fall of 2016, I began my postdoctoral work with Dr. Ross Levine, setting out to model clonal evolution and clone-clone interactions in myeloid leukemias. We developed a series of novel mouse genetic tools to evaluate mutation order and oncogene-dependency using multiple, orthogonally inducible recombinases. Genomic efforts focused on single cell DNA sequencing, resulting in a comprehensive map of the genetic architecture of myeloid malignancy.

  • Nisarg Shah

    Research Specialist D

With over a decade of experience in cancer research, I joined Bowman lab in February 2023 as a Research Specialist D. Before joining UPenn, I worked in a Lung Cancer Therapeutics lab at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in New York. I received my Masters of Science degree from Polytechnic Institute of New York University.

  • Angela Youn

    Research Specialist A

  • Michael Bowman PhD

    Postdoctoral Researcher

I received B.S. degrees in both Mechanical Engineering and Electrical Engineering from Colorado School of Mines in 2017. I then received my PhD within the Department of Mechanical Engineering, Colorado School of Mines in 2023 and joined University of Pennsylvania as a Postdoctoral Researcher in June 2023 and currently working on clonal evolution and bioinformatics.

My research interests include human-robot interaction and cooperation, teleoperation and shared control systems, grasping and manipulation, optimal control and reinforcement learning.

  • Lesley Moreno

    Administrative Assistant

I received a B.S. in Business Administration at the California State University, Chico in 2023. I recently moved from California to Pennsylvania and am currently the Administrative Assistant in the Cancer Biology Department at the University of Pennsylvania. My interests include being active and playing lacrosse, along with crocheting in my free time.

  • Shreeya Gounder

    Intern

  • Anushka Gandhi

    Summer Intern

  • Graduate Student

    Roopsha Bandopadhyay

    Graduate Student

I received a Bachelor of Science degree in Bioengineering and a minor in Writing from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 2021. I joined the Bowman Lab in March 2023 as a Ph.D. student in the Department of Bioengineering at Penn. My previous research focused on base editor protein engineering and evaluation. In the Bowman Lab, I am focused on understanding how either chemical inhibition or genetic depletion of Flt3 impact leukemia dynamics and fate outcomes. Outside the lab, I greatly care about science communication and education. In my free time, I like to rock climb, collect rocks, and listen to rock music.

  • Varsha Singh

    Postdoctoral Researcher

With over a decade diving into the fascinating world of cancer genomics, I've also dabbled in the intriguing puzzle of neurodegenerative disorders during my masters. It’s funny how these two fields, cancer and neurodegeneration, seem to have an inverse relationship in the genomic world—while cancer cells are all about "go, go, go!" and endless growth, neurodegenerative cells are like "nah, we’re done" and slowly fade away. I earned my PhD in lung cancer from AIIMS, New Delhi, in 2020, and then took a deep dive into single-cell genomics at the DNA level during my time at Lund University, Sweden, focusing on leukemia. Now, I continue this journey in the Bowman lab. Outside the lab, I enjoy writing blogs on my life journey and scientific topics, hiking, and walking to clear my head from all those genomic twists and turns!

Previous Lab Members

Adrian Dizon.

Adrian is currently a PhD student in the Biomedical Sciences Graduate Program at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine (LKSOM).  Formally a Research Specialist at the Bowman lab in the University of Pennsylvania (2022-2023), he helped in researching clonal evolution in Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML).

Taliyah Evans

Taliyah is currently a senior at Haverford college majoring in biology, with a focus in biochemistry. Her broader interests are at the intersection of genetics, cancer, and biochemistry. As a summer intern, Taliyah focused on optimizing culture conditions to support leukemic stem cell growth ex vivo, using a computational approach to understand how co-mutants respond to therapy.

Zhangyi (Eva) Li

Master’s student

Aditya Singhvi

Aditya is rising sophomore at the University of Maryland, College Park, majoring in Neuroscience and Business Management.

Raian Imad Hamad

Raian is an undergraduate student at the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, majoring in Industrial Microbiology. Currently, his research focuses on developing a Gold Nanostructured dsDNA Biosensor to detect various bacterial pathogens in contaminated water samples.
